The reason why Life Course Scholars is such an incredible program is because of the opportunities us students receive to have our hearts and mind touched by the seniors of San Diego. It was extremely heartbreaking to hear the professors sharing with the class all they had planned for Spring 2020—all the site visits cancelled due to COVID-19. I remember how they were so excited for us to do Zumba again, revisit Gary and Mary West Center for another group HAPs, and visiting sites we were yet to explore. When UCSD started to make changes and decided to go virtual for Spring quarter, for a second, I rejoiced because I no longer needed to buy a student parking pass; then, immediately LCS came into mind. I have never been this unenthusiastic entering a new quarter.
To my surprise, the quarter is actually not so bad. Our lovely professors of USP141 were able to adjust so fast and made it seamless, minimizing stress. Instead of keeping my negative outlook on the virtual quarter, I looked for little positives/blessings. For example, being able to stay in pajamas all day. On top of our professor’s efforts to keep us students thinking about the elderly population, the high risk of elder adults getting COVID-19 pushed the students to direct attention to finding ways to help out the senior community.
I am positive that this will be a great quarter with LCS regardless of the situation. I continue to learn and am still eager to find ways to promote healthy aging. The group HAPs project is still evolving, and it is a bit difficult to keep up with the changes, but I know it will be fine.
