Casa de Mañana is the place I want to sign my parents up for when they hit retirement. The high prices of $3600/month means nothing when they get all the amenities and resources that this facility offers. Similar to an all-inclusive resort, Casa offers their residents free food, maintenance, classes, the list goes on. But this is not the only extraordinary part about Casa de Mañana. The social aspect of the facility was very different from the other sites we visited. Being that majority of the residents are highly-educated, it seems like all the residents are actively searching for some intellectual or social stimulation-- and Casa de Mañana provides it.
When aging, it is important to keep one's brain active to age healthily. At Casa, that is no issue; given the oceanside view, all the amenities, and ways to remain active, there is no doubt that the residents face only a minuscule fraction of the stress that one would have to face if they were living in, for example, the Hometel in Downtown San Diego.
Casa de Mañana is living proof that high quality of life comes with the necessary services for the aging adult. We met this lovely elder, Alice, whom was jumping around, skipping, and cracking jokes. We were asked to guess her age... 74? 76? no no at most 80... She was 100, and almost hitting 101. I've seen extreme videos of 90 year old women doing gymnastics, but Alice was a less extreme, realistic model of how the world's aging population should be. I hope to be like Alice when I'm at that age, blissfully enjoying life.
But the sad truth about all of this, is that money really does buy happiness. Yes, family, friends, relationships are all things that cannot be bought by money, but leisure and comfortability is something that can be bought and plays a major role in how one ages.
