As we come to an end with our quarter, we are finalizing the details for our HAP and our findings through each of our events. Spending time in class to share and discuss aspects of our HAP helps us truly see the product and effect behind the Life Course Scholar Program. As we share each of our posters with each other we start to realize we each carry similar intentions behind our HAPs, which is to bring well-being that fosters self-confidence into the senior community. Through our HAPs, we all strive to increase the resources available to the senior community as it is a community that can often be under resourced and underfunded due to the many barriers faced for this age group.
This past week, my group also had the opportunity to host our HAP event at the Mary and Gary West Senior Center. Our HAP focused on a Senior Wellness day at the Mary and Gary West Senior Center in which we had self-care stations set up such as: face masks, nail bar, self-massages, coloring, and some clothes available for the seniors to take home. The focus of our Living Creating Striving event was to foster an environment filled with relaxation so that the seniors from that community can take a moment to step out of their daily stressors and focus on their well-being and happiness. Through providing a clothing drive, we aimed to provide the community members an opportunity to revamp their wardrobe for free. This clothing drive was a very important piece to our HAP event since we were focusing on increasing resources for well-being to a community that often lives below the poverty line.
At the end of our event, our team was truly happy with the results as we received plenty of positive feedback from the Mary and Gary West community. I know for myself, I got an opportunity to move through each of the stations with Bertha (a senior from the community). Spending almost the entirety of the event with one person made the experience truly amazing and allowed me to learn so much from an individual that is older than me. The reason this meant a lot to me was because it made me feel almost as if I was spending an evening with my grandma, and this was something I have never done since my grandparents to do not live in this country, making this HAP a truly great experience.
