The weekly meetings of the UCSD Life Course Scholar Program began earlier this month. Our initial efforts have been toward getting to know one another, and building a learning community in which all participants’ perspectives are sought and valued. Our belief is that knowledge and insight will come not only from learning about the excellent research and literature available on aging, health, demographics, social policy, and urban design, among other topics, but from experiential activities, “place-based” learning in local community settings, and from the stories and wisdom of local elders on a variety of topics.
Our inaugural cohort of Life Course Scholars is a wonderful group of intelligent and engaged undergraduates from across a number of majors and minors at UCSD. In the forthcoming weeks, each will share a little bit about her/himself, and her/his motivation and interest in issues of aging and the lifecourse. Each will give a summary and sense of our meetings, activities, intellectual explorations, discussions, and community excursions, as well as offer reflections on these encounters and interactions.
We welcome comments from all readers! Issues of aging, and of development, learning, health and well being across the life course are of relevance and concern to us all. We hope to share what we learn, and look forward to your contributions as well.
