By the end of class one, I was feeling nothing but a sense of hope and the start of a strong togetherness I could sense forming between me and my fellow like-minded colleagues. The diversity in the room was refreshing as I know there will be a lot to learn from each and every person, because each person carries an unseen history. It is amazing how as diverse as a population can be, and how different our cultural and social experiences growing up have been, we can still come together with a similar vision and use our unique perspectives and insights to shine light on how to solve pressing issues of society (like negative stigma towards ageism). One thing I like to say is:
It is hard to see a path through the eyes of the marginalized,
So I can't write them off in the margins like other guys
I will write their names in big letters in the center of the page
Won't abridge their story
Instead build a bridge
A connection to fortify
A lot of times, when we look at problems from the top down, we realize that many people at the top aren't focused on people at bottom ground. This is where our class can come in. We can use our platform to help lift people from the ground up, and empower them to use their strengths so they know their being isn't subtle. There is still so much to look forward to as you grow old, and there is still so much beautiful about elders from the inside out, we just have to change the inside out way of thinking of ageism. We can learn so much from our elders, in fact, some of my most valuable life lessons have been from elder relatives who I respect so much.
It was interesting talking about the dual stigma elder women often face. It is the sad reality that many elder women in society are pushed to the side and go by unacknowledged, but this needs to change as elder women offer so much life to our society.
As a student in this class, I hope to bring my strengths to the table to inspire an empathy vision which empowers resistance to hate. I love to work in teams, and I know working with students who have the same passion for spreading compassion and advocating for those who often don't get the opportunity to do so themselves will be a heart warming experience.
