Today we went to the Gary & Mary West Senior Wellness Center in Downtown San Diego. When I first walked in, I was very surprised at how many people were in the facility and how clean and well-maintained it was. The first person I sat down with was Frankie, a man who was happy to talk to Andrew and me. He told us about how he was born 3 blocks away from this wellness center and how he volunteered for many years prior to retiring and attending this center himself. Frankie also shared with us his favorite things about San Diego: the beaches (specifically the ones in La Jolla) and seeing the waves crash against the windows of The Marine Room. Frankie told us that he comes to this facility every day and that he truly appreciates its existence as it gives him the opportunity to learn, exercise and socialize with others.
Later that day, I was working on a puzzle with an older woman named Deedee. She shared with me a lot about her life, things both good and bad. It definitely sounded like she had a difficult and unfair life, so I was glad that she is currently able to utilize the resources at the senior wellness center. She told me about some of the people she has met at the facility and how they joke around with each other all the time while she does puzzles. It made me happy to hear how this facility serves as a space for her to do one of her favorite activities and socialize as well.
Serving the seniors lunch was very meaningful to me. It warmed my heart to see how appreciative these seniors were for someone to serve them a meal. At the end of the visit, I felt very pleased to know that a facility like this exists for seniors. I definitely think that a center like this should exist everywhere because of how much good it does.
