We had our first class outing and group bonding event this past Saturday at the Martin Johnson House on the SIO campus. It was a day filled with fun, learning and bonding starting from 9 in the morning. I enjoyed getting to know my peers in a relaxed setting where we could just chat and eat. I learned that a lot of us like to cook and own interesting kitchen equipment, so I am hoping to have a cooking social or potluck one day!
My favorite two activities from retreat were the game of Life (Course Scholars) and the coastal walk. I thought that the board game was a fun way to discuss and see how privilege and unanticipated life events can heavily impact people's lives. As a player with the blue game piece, it was interesting to see how my perspective changed from being disappointed that I had the most disadvantages in the game to being thankful for life after the purple game piece passed away.
I also enjoyed the coastal walk because it helped me see and experience firsthand the walkability of our community. Seeing as how I found it slightly difficult, I definitely think the path could be improved upon. Some things that could be added are light posts, railings to protect against falls into the cacti and handrails on the stairs. Some benefits of the walk include fresh air, beautiful scenery and a smooth paved road (for part of the trail).
Overall, I had a great time at retreat and am looking forward to our site visits over the next few weeks!
