This week we had the opportunity to meet older individuals at the San Diego LGBT Community Center located in Hillcrest. It was a heartwarming experience to speak with people who were so open about their life experiences, especially those revolving around their sexuality and identity. I had the pleasure of speaking with Martin, Marc, Roger and Rosa.
Something we talked about that stands out to me is how this community center serves as both a safe space and resource for them. Martin told me about how he frequents the internet café often to read about the latest news and comes to most of the programs offered by the center. In fact, he has come out to the past LCS LEGS over the years at the community center. All of them expressed how warm and welcoming this space has been for them after having moved from other parts of the country to San Diego.
I enjoyed having the time to talk about simple things like music with them. We talked about how, in addition to the change in music over the years, the ways in which we access and play music has changed over the years. For instance, their generation would listen to AM and FM radio, but most younger folks these days would plug in their AUX and play music from their phone's playlist. Also, one of them mentioned how FM radio is gradually becoming less used as electric cars cannot access it due to the wavelengths not working properly for that type of vehicle. I thought this was really interesting considering how electric cars are considered the way of the future.
