This past Wednesday we went to the Bayside Community Center to participate in intergenerational Zumba. In spirits of the Valentine Day celebration/ holiday, we all dressed in red and were dancing alongside senior citizens that were 70+ years of age. Aside from our killer dance moves, the most memorable moment was when a man turned to me and said, “thirty more minutes” and I was exhausted by all the movement! Halfway through the class, I turned around and found nearly half of our class drinking water and resting while the Zumba regulars were ready for more dancing! After the class, I spoke to a couple that attend this Zumba class multiple times a week (they are currently ~80 years old). They have been going for nearly seven years and on the days they don’t do Zumba, they attend a weight training class! WOW! I hope I can have nearly as much energy as they do when I’m their age!
In commonality to several of the senior centers we attended, many of them incorporated classes of physical activity (such as Zumba, weights, yoga, etc). Although there are many obvious reasons for why these classes are provided (physical activity and to promote a healthy lifestyle), I feel that the people who attend these classes have other motivations as well. Whether it be the reason to exercise, to get out of the house, or to socialize with other people, this class provided a platform for older citizens to enjoy themselves and their livelihood through dance
