This week Professor Lewis and Bussell showed us photos that were taken at the past Senior Prom Events. We were given time to come up with a theme and plan for this year’s event. I am so happy that we unanimously decided on a Fairytale theme! As part of the activities committee, Cindy, Sophia, and I came up with ideas of how to incorporate fun and engaging activities with the EPs and ourselves. Primarily, we decided to have a fun photobooth where participants can dress up in capes, wear crowns, and hold funny props to take pictures together. For those who love to dance, we decided to have a setlist of music that has a mixture of ballroom and contemporary music. For those who do not wish to dance, we decided to incorporate activities in which we can work with one another to make memorable items! One idea was to teach EPs to make a flower crown and fairy night lights! Activities of this sort will be so engaging; I simply cannot wait until this day arrives!
I believe that hosting a Senior Prom event is important for several reasons. First and foremost, EPs at these centers come from different backgrounds and lifestyles. It may be the case that one never had the opportunity to experience dressing up to attend a high school dance. I feel that it is important to create such an event that will grant the opportunity for those who have not experienced this. Moreover, a common stigma is that as one ages, you are inhibited from doing ‘fun’ things. I genuinely believe this is not the case, as my own grand parents have proven this false. Hosting an event that incorporates intergenerational interactions, dancing, and memorable activities dismantles this misconception.
