During our retreat, we learned some facts about the aging population in cities. One of my favorite facts I learned is as people age, their levels of happiness increase. The U-shaped curve defies the stereotype of the “grumpy old man/woman”. As we grow up, aging should not be feared but embraced. People who are older have many memories and wisdom to share. This is why our guest speaker, Patricia Benesh, Ed. D, has created a book to help writers create a memoir of their elderly “extraordinary person”. It was amazing to see how many stories were captured within several pages. I believe that this assignment will help our extraordinary person feel heard and cherished.
We had several activities take place during our retreat. As we walked along the trail beside Scripps Coastal Reserve, I imagined how my experience would differ if I were a senior. Honestly, I doubt much would change. Perhaps I’d get tired quickly after walking. As I stared at the waves crashing against the shore, I could only imagine that when I’m older I will be enjoying the little things like this more. The journal assignment took me by surprise. I’ve considered the thought of getting old, but I usually pushed the idea away because it seems so far away. What would life be at 80 years old? In summary, I wrote that I hope I will be spending my time connecting with loved ones and exploring. I also hope that I will have more time to learn new skills or practice self-care by cooking meals, reading, and dancing.
