This week, I presented my Current Event Presentation with Alex. “FaceApp proves that we cannot resist the temptation to peek at our decline, and yet we view these images as speculative fiction, not realized and therefore unreal.” This powerful quote sums up Nicci Gerrard’s article FaceApp and the Savage Shock of Aging. I have personally used the app to take a glance at how I will look in the future. While very young, it’s easy to detach ourselves from a fictional image that hasn’t become a reality yet. Like I’ve noted, we are all a combination of every age we have experienced up until now.
My group also presented our analysis of the book Selling the Fountain of Youth by Arlene Weintraub. The anti-aging industry has made a substantial cultural impact while making huge profits from people’s fear of getting older. Weintraub has researched the trend of hormone therapy and its damaging effects. It was eye-opening reading the extent that doctors and advertisers will go through to make a profit, whether it’s domestically or across the border. Aging is not a disease, and shouldn’t be seen as one. Advertisements have the ability to be impactful, and we should all be more careful about what we’re buying into.
