We had the pleasure today of visiting the Bayside community center and we joined the elders in a Zumba class. It was such a fun and wonderful experience. They looked so happy to see us joining them on one of their daily activities. We danced for an entire hour and none of the ladies seemed phase by the workout – we were trying to keep up with them.
After the workout was finished we stayed and mingled with some of the ladies. I spoke with one woman in particular, Katy. She is from Argentina and only has her children here in San Diego and the rest of her family lives back in Argentina. She was the sweetest! Her vibe was so warm and welcoming, just like a little ball of sunshine! She remined me so much of my grandmother. Katy was so open to talk to us about her life and even asked us if we were going to come more often. She stated that she comes twice a week and she loves it! Her other hobbies include, watching over her garden and growing her own vegetables and spending time with her family. They also sit around together after Zumba some days to knit! She said she donated a huge box full of beanies that she has knitted in the past.
This experience also made me think of the many elders that do not have access to opportunities as these or are neglected from family. I wish there were more centers around neighborhoods where there is a large amount of elderly population to support them through healthy and positive hobbies.
It was so interesting getting to know another individual in a short amount of time and establishing a bond so quickly. She was truly a sweet soul and as I continued my conversation with her I was more intrigued in knowing more about her life. I can’t wait for when we return later next quarter.
