Wow, it's already finals week for this quarter and UCSD has survived the online learning environment for one entire year. With the quarter coming to a close, I want to say that this quarter and this year has taught me so much. In short, this year taught me the value of loved ones, the importance of slowing down, and the disparities in treatment amongst different ethnic groups, particularly BIPOC. This class has continued to open my mind towards ageist remarks and views that are so prevalent and normalized in society. It has also revealed the diversity of the aging process as we finished up our oral history reports these last two weeks. It was lovely hearing their stories and a common theme was the resilience of many of the extraordinary people. May their examples provide inspiration to continue to be resilient in fighting two pandemics: ageism and the COVID-19 pandemic.
Although this quarter is ending, our class is not yet over (thankfully). We will be able to apply what we learned when we implement our Healthy Aging Projects in the spring quarter. My group’s project is Living, Creating, and Sharing Memories (LCS Memories). It will be a video project that is a compilation of older adults’ responses to our interview questions. Our purpose for this project is essentially to share the stories of older adults; and through our direct involvement with older adults we hope to fight against ageism and provide a sense of comfort through intergenerational connection. I am excited to talk to these individuals as every interaction I have with older adults--through the email correspondents, Zoom discussion, or through my phone pal-- has allowed me to come out of the conversation with a smile on my face and something new learned. Here’s to spring break because it’s been a long year with the online learning, but I am excited to come back rested, refreshed, and ready to continue learning about the life course and the older adult population.
