We did our Learning Exchange Group at Gary and Mary West Senior Center. My group- Sabrina, Leslye, Elizabeth and I talked to Kenneth! Kenneth was a UCSD professor who taught for the Department of Psychiatry! What a small world- UCSD has such a large outreach! He was such a pleasure to converse with about his life! He asked questions about our faith-based religions- whether we were Catholic, atheist, or Buddhist etc. He admitted he went to the Catholic church across the street and felt that God was a big part of his life! He asked us if we believed in afterlife and judgment day, and some of us did while others didn't. We also shared our favorite foods, places to travel, and goals in our lives. We had a variety of goals- physicians, business, and psychologist. Our favorite foods ranged from strawberry shortcake to sashimi to tacos. I grew very hungry when we talked about food! Ken's favorite travel destiny was the Philipines because of the rich culture and tropical environment. We said we wanted to travel to Japan, China, France, and parts of Europe! Kenneth shared a dismal experience. He did not realize his ex-caretaker stole money from him by signing his income checks for him and cashing them in her bank account. When he discovered months later, he was angry and fired her. He now has a different caretaker. In retrospective, LEGs were more valuable if we could either connect with the person of interest or they were willing to share something personal.
