Gary and Mary West Center offers resources for seniors such as affordable dental healthcare, meals, and activities. This was a unique experience for many of us because we get a better picture of how everything functions and how politics, laws, and tax could all play parts affecting the quality of elder’s lives. It is unfortunate to see that many elders are living in poverty and struggle to have affordable housing. Often, we, as the young generation, usually do not pay attention to the elders and their situation, and this class serves as a bridge that helps to fill the gap between the young and old generation.
During the site visit, we got a chance to introduce ourselves in front of seniors who are at Gary and Mary West Center. They were all very friendly and caring when talking to us, and I met a couple who were from Hunan, China. They shared their experiences with me of why they chose to live in San Diego and were very proud of their kids and granddaughter, who are currently attending the University of California, Berkeley. They were excited that we were here to talk to them because they did not have many chances to see their granddaughter in person because she was very busy with classes. After a small talk with them, life course scholars started helping staffs to serve lunch for seniors. It is new to hear that staffs usually serve ladies first at a table. It felt nice to do something hands-on outside of the classroom, and I enjoyed spending my time at Gary and Mary West Center. I can’t wait for all of us come together to make an excellent, extraordinary Senior Prom at the end of this quarter.
