This Wednesday, we finally had a class meeting on campus. I remember walking to class that morning and not completely remembering whether class was at 9:00am or 9:30am. Thankfully, I went with 9 and that was the correct answer. Logistically, it was a very full day. We had current event presentations, check ins, planning sessions for our group HAPs and NAPs. I presented a current event with my group that day. We read an article about Memory cafes and services for those with cognitive impairments as well as their caretakers. The article talked about the benefits to having a space where people with memory problems can come, socialize, and participate in activities. It also discussed the importance of a caretaker’s wellness. Our presentation led into a discussion of program accessibility due to the fact that services like Memory cafes are generally only available in more affluent areas. We also discussed ways to provide emotional, mental, and social support for caretakers as they often perform very emotionally intensive tasks. Another group presented on Prince Phillip’s car accident and discussed the implications of putting an upper age limit on driving. Driving is a main form of transportation for many people. It facilitates independence and independence is important to an elder’s social and mental health. But, as people age, their fine motor skills decrease and with that goes their driving skills. I think it is very difficult to find a solution to this issue. The third group presented an article about social connections in urban and rural areas. The discussion here focused on what can be done to better connect elders in rural areas.
