We had some great conversations about the book we read, “ Happiness Is A Choice You Make”. I think this was a pretty interesting take on aging and happiness. The author told stories about these elders but they interjected with their experience. I felt those interjections are very commonly what goes on in our heads in regards to aging. I also like how the ending gave us a very realistic view of aging. It’s not perfect and it doesn't always have the best outcome especially when the elders are minorities or come from disadvantaged backgrounds. What stood out for me was how even in difficult circumstances the elders still had positive outlooks and worked with what they had. I hope that I will also have this resilience as I age.
In the classroom we talked about how we need to bring up aging and barieral procedures with our loved ones even though they are very difficult topics. From personal experience not everyone has the opportunity to save up for funerals or nursing homes. And there are lots of cultural differences that may play a large influence in the choice to use a nursing facility. In my family we were the ones to take care of our elders. There wasn’t any other option but also we have the saying, “How you treat your parents, your children will treat you”. I really do believe it , seeing how my parents, aunts, and uncles really took care of my grandparents showed me how rewarding it can be to give back to that person that sacrificed so much for you. My parents may not be perfect but I know they did everything in their power and knowledge to give me the best life and they were wonderful role models in how to take care of our elders. I hope that I am blessed enough to take care of my parents and I hope that my children learn the valuable lesson of taking care of their elders. It is not easy to see your loved ones pass away but I know that I will always cherish those last moments with my grandmother.
