This week we put together the senior prom! It was such an amazing experience, and from the look of it, it seems that the residents of Casa de Manana enjoyed the event as well! We arrived there ans set up lots of very cute decorations! People started trickling in and quickly filled the room! I was excited to see that there were so many seniors that were interested in attending our event!
It took us a bit of motivation but we convinced ourselves to go dance! I think it was the perfect way to distress from the long week of school work and clearly the residents enjoyed it as well! A couple walked in as asked for a seat right in front of the dance floor! They said they wanted to see the “entertainment” , which in this case was the dancing: Us! Many of the residents told us how refreshing it was to see young people dance!
I was a little apprehensive about the event, I wasn't sure that these people from such a high social class would really be excited to see a bunch of students and get cute little prizes from the raffle. But as it turns out, the raffle was one of the highlights of the evening! Everyone was so excited to get their little prize even if it was just a small gift card or plant. I think this experience really shows to me how it's really the little details that make the biggest difference in our lives. The sharing of small moments: dancing together, talking over a drink, or winning a raffle! Everyone wants to have that human connection and feel like a winner! Even if just for a small prize.
I am definitely looking forward to going to the next senior prom at the senior center. I think that it will be a great way to relax for the evening and an awesome opportunity to get to meet some new people! I hope to see the people I saw the last time and reconnect. While our resources are limited it hope that our enthusiasm and dancing energize the place as it did here at Casa de Manana!
