Today we went to the West Center again to have some conversation with of the seniors. My group and I had a very great conversation with Mr. Kenneth. He was a great conversationalist and he was asking us a million questions!! There was no need for conversation cards because we were each able of contribute to the conversation naturally.
It was amazing to see how quickly we delved into deep topics and because of that we were able to really get to know him and each other a better. We started out with very basic questions - Where we were born, what we want to do in the future, and what our favorite foods are. Then it quickly came to question about our beliefs - Do we go to church, do we believe in God, what’s our GPA?! After that last question we quickly pivoted back to the religion questions!
I think our conversation about religion was really rewarding. It made reflect on some of my life choices and where I came from. Mr. K was so surprised that the majority of us didn’t go to church. We all mentioned our experiences with religion, personally I grew up in church and spent a lot of my childhood attending church services. He as us if we didn't go to church , how could we be connected with God? I replied with “But God is everywhere”, and he laughed and agreed! I appreciated how he listened to our different opinions and ideas about God and church. He didn’t lecture us on what we should be doing but rather heard us out.
This has been one of my favorite conversations so far, I think I learned a lot about myself and how life circumstances can lead you to different places. I would love to talk to some more seniors at the West Center.
