I was eager and excited for the first class meeting of the Life Course Scholars Program. Though much of the class content was administrative in that we discussed the syllabus, and the readings and projects we were expected to complete, it was still a great motivator and overview of what to expect for the program. One such project or event that I’m most looking forward to is the two dances we will be putting on for seniors in different parts of the community. Through our discussion of what’s all involved in these dances such as food, music, decorations and prizes, as well as how well it has been received in the past, I’m looking forward to planning and seeing them come to life.
Beyond that, each of us were able share our extraordinary person in our lives that we plan to discuss in oral history project. Each student shared a picture and little bit about why they chose their person for the project. This was a good experience, as listening and seeing the different extraordinary persons it further deepened my understanding that the aging experience differs between person to person. One observation that was seen through this is that when speaking with their extraordinary person, much of the class will be speaking in another language. This interests me, as I eager to learn how different cultures as well as the way in which people communicate effects the overall aging experience. I’m looking forward to what my extraordinary person, my father, and I gain in creating the oral history project.
This is just the beginning and I can’t wait for what’s ahead over the next two quarters of the Life Course Scholars Program.
