The in class session this past Wednesday was jammed packed with different things to do. We were able to start the class with each of us sharing our thoughts on Bayside Community Center. It was a great to see how the different perspectives each person had of the center, and we all expressed that doing Zumba was one of the highlights. We then were then given a presentation of the book “The Chair Rocks: A Manifesto Against Ageism” which I thoroughly enjoyed. The book provided an effective framework on how to deal with discrimination that occurs due to someone’s age, and acted as a call to action to combat aging stereotypes. The class engaged in a healthy discussion surrounding the book, and in doing so, we were able to draw on personal experiences to further support need for change in how we discuss aging.
After a short break, we then were able to split up into our committees for our group healthy aging projects that will take place over next couple weeks. My committee worked on figuring out the things we needed to order for the photo booth, including the background and props. Once we finished finalizing the details for the upcoming HAP, we were then briefed by Professor Bussell on same additional resources we can use for our neighborhood assessment project. Being that my group is focused on La Jolla, the resources including the community plans and demographic information, will be helpful in creating our NAP. At the end of class, I had the opportunity to share my oral history project that I did on my father. I was able to share the memories and photos that my father had detailed, as well as my finished product made of various pieces of wood. I look forward to the opportunity of presenting my project to my father in the coming weeks.
