This past Wednesday, we had presentations of Current Events, Oral History projects, Selling the Fountain of Youth Book Review. During the presentations of current events, both groups discussed the advantages and disadvantages of senior co-housing. I thought that it was really important for seniors to receive adequate companionship through home care aids, hospice, or support of their neighbors to help with chores or the cost of rent. Some of my fellow classmates also brought up the negative aspects of senior co-housing which were the difficulty of choosing compatible roommates because even as college students looking for roommates, we all agreed it can be very hard! Living with roommates who they clash with can make someone feel more lonely than if they lived alone. Moving on to the oral history presentations, this was honestly my favorite part of class. I loved hearing and learning about my classmates’ EP and it was so incredibly inspiring to hear their stories and their experiences of gathering their EP’s memories and putting the entire project together. I loved that many of my classmates made their memoir so creatively into books, treasure box of memories, models, origami, raps, and put so much effort in creating a meaningful memoir for their EP. Lastly, Sabrina, Maria, and I closed with our groups’ Selling the Fountain of Youth presentation. It went well! The entire class discussed the pros/cons of intervening with the aging process and how we address the processes of our society that drives the attitude we have of aging. I think it’s just so interesting that there are so many people (from very young) who are willing to buy these anti-aging serums and go through ill-tested hormone therapy to “replace” their hormones. The amount of profit that these anti-aging doctors receive shows that as a society, we are fearful of the effects of aging and perceive the process of aging as a disease rather than embracing it as something we all go through naturally.
