We visited Linda Vista for this week's Wednesday outing. Once we arrived in the city, I realized that there is a vast socioeconomic disparity between La Jolla and Linda Vista and knew that there will be a lot to learn about. Corey, the director of Bayside, told us about an incredibly fortuitous transformation of Bayside. To make a long story short, Bayside Community Center was in a dire situation, smothered with debt and its closing inevitable. Amazingly, a company had interest in building a community center in an underpriveliged community, just what Corey had been praying for. The hundreds of people that loved Bayside and many who depended on it will receive an incredible gift: a brand new facility like nothing they have imagined. We saw the new building being built right next to where we all were sitting and a new chapter about to bloom in Linda Vista and for its people. I was so happy to hear this story and realized yet again about life's unpredictability. We must never let go of hope, even in dire situations, and if we can endure long enough, a door of opportunity will open.
Afterwards, the students and elderly danced Zumba together. I am personally a terrible dancer and was reminded of this fact again, but it was a such a fresh, new experience for me. Hopefully, if I participate in Zumba again, I will be a bit better than before!
I also had a conversation with a senior during lunch. It was so enjoyable for me; this is one of the reasons why I joined LCS. Engaging in conversation with the elderly, learning about their lives, and at the same time even learning about oneself, is an incredibly enriching and precious experience. I thoroughly valued it and look forward to more in the future.
