I am so delighted by how everything turned out in the end; the dance could not have been better, in my opinion. As I watched the seniors dance and have a wonderful time with classic music playing in the background, I felt emotions and thoughts that reminded me of the values that the LCS program embodies and exhibits.
I really loved the music that was played, live, by a professional duo. Songs like Moon River and Twist and Shout satiated my old taste in music and set an atmosphere in the room I've never felt before. However, these songs must have touched the seniors a lot more deeply than they did for me; I am sure for many of the elderly the songs played were nostalgic, bringing back sweet memories of the past. They were either dancing with the students and/or listening to the music and watching the dance, and it was easy to discern that they were enjoying it. When many of the seniors won raffle prizes, they couldn't contain their joy, which it was lovely to see. This, it of itself, was wholly satisfying for all of the students who organized the event, for our ultimate goal with the dance was achieved.
I believe that the seniors valued the event in another aspect. They enjoy relationships and bonding with the younger generation, but this is not always reciprocal. Students in the LCS program are empathetic towards the elderly and are curious to learn about their lives, listen to their life stories, and have desire in helping make their lives more fulfilling. From conversations I have had with some seniors during the dance, I felt their sincere gratitude in our efforts to reach out to them. I am glad that the LCS program is giving us this opportunity as a class to be a positive influence and surely, the seniors we have met at Casa are role-models for us.
