We went to Bayside Community Center, which is in Linda Vista. When we arrived, three of the workers there explained what Bayside is and what it will be. The sense of community they have there is strong and have been built by the community members themselves. People grew up there, warmly welcome others, and make deep connections.
The executive director told us his experience at Bayside, that when he arrived it was extremely in debt. There needed to be a solution or else this place that everybody loves will be gone. The perfect opportunity came up when they were offered to sell their property to be turned into a school. They are now out of debt and lots of construction is happening to be able to open the school in time, by August 2018. The community center is also be renovated, and small businesses will also open there. So it’s basically perfect, a community center right next to a school.
After, we did Zumba with the seniors at the community center. At first, it was pretty easy and I could keep up, but then a fast paced song came up and I was actually sweating. I had a lot of fun and it was a good pace for me. The community members welcomed us with open arms and invited us back to Zumba with them again.
That day was also their monthly potluck. All the food was very good and I tried to have a little of everything. We also chatted with some seniors and we learned a lot about each other’s lives. They all just seem so full of life and enjoy the time that they spend here with others. It is truly a great community and it is still growing.
