For class, we started off with sharing our thoughts on our last site visit, Casa de Manana. As expected, people loved this form of community among seniors. After, Rhiannon, Nhi, and I did our presentation on Selling the Fountain Youth: How the Anti-Aging Industry Made a Disease Out of Getting Old and Made Billions. Even though I was pretty nervous, I think it went well overall. My fellow LCSers had some great input during the discussion.
We then got into our group HAP committees and finalized our plans. Since I am in decorations, the class voted on The Great Gatsby as our theme, with Night on the Red Carpet as backup. It ended up being me as the main communicator with the people from Casa de Manana and the Gary and Mary West Senior Center. We are all excited to put all our efforts together and see our end product at both of the events.
Students that did not present the book, got to present their Oral History Project. We got to learn a little of their Extraordinary Person’s story. I think that their lives then, are so different from our lives now. When they were our age or younger, they seem so independent and have gathered a lot of life experience. Although my extraordinary person, or anyone else’s, may think their life is ordinary and wonder why anyone would want to know about it, I find it really interesting and worth creating a memoir for.
Two students also presented their organization, Get a Cane: Keep America Moving. It gives away walking assist devices to those who need it, by receiving donations. They are trying to reach out to those in Mexico, since there is a lot of need for walking devices there. This could potentially be a HAP that one of us could take on. What they are doing has a huge impact on people’s lives and it reduces waste. Write to you all next week, peace!!
