We visited Casa de Mañana Retirement Community today. A fellow LCSer and I have been volunteering and holding our own programs there for a few years now, so we both know how nice and amazing it is. I was happy that everyone else in the program thought the same, and as usual, everybody wants to live there when they retire, or actually right now.
Casa is right by the ocean and the entrance faces it. When we arrived, Betty and Kelly greeted us and shared what Casa is all about. Kelly, the Life Enrichment Director, helped us start our programs here and get more residents to attend them. They gave us a tour of the whole place, in both the independent and assisted living areas. The residents really have everything they need here. They have their own private living space and are provided 3 meals a day in very classy dining rooms. They have a swimming pool, golf course, library, movie theater, trading post, and much more. Like the other senior communities we visited, they prepare a lot of activities, such as exercise classes and socials. They even go on outings to museums, performances, and other places; and also provide transportation. There are a lot of clubs and groups at Casa too. It sort of reminds me of a college campus.
In addition, the workers are all very happy to be there and enjoy helping and assisting seniors. The Executive Director, Justin, gave a really motivating speech that encouraged us to work in this industry. To him, his work is very fulfilling and rewarding. The residents that we met love him and are really grateful for him being there. Near the end of our visit, we just sat and talked to a few of the residents that lived there. The next day when I went back to Casa for Intergenerational Choir practice, I met them again and they remembered me. We both gain something from these interactions, we learn from each other and enjoy each other’s company. So even these short conversations are lasting and could be a start to building a deeper relationship.
Peace out!
