We visited the Gary and Mary West Senior Center, which is a part of Serving Seniors. Before we entered the building, we had to wash our hands at these portable handwashing stations right by the entrance. They gave us a quick tour of the place, it was a lot nicer than the other housing facilities that we visited before. They wanted this place to be a community for seniors. They had computers, lots of activities, and even a dentist. Having a dentist in the building itself, is progress. A lot of health problems start in a person’s teeth, and dental hygiene is often ignored or overlooked because of other health issues.
In the conference room, we discussed the future of seniors, so basically our futures. There won’t be enough money in social security to support us when we become seniors, so it is very important to start preparing for retirement early.
My favorite part of the day was when we were serving lunch to the seniors. We first introduced ourselves in the language that we are fluent in. Before the lunch started, we all went around to the tables and mingled a bit. It was fun meeting people and getting to know them. At first, I thought we were going to be scooping food into trays, but actually we brought trays of food to the tables. The times that I volunteered at the Rescue Mission, I would be the one scooping the food and people would line up to pick up their meals. Before, it did not cross my mind that it would be difficult for seniors to pick up their own food, even though it is obvious now.
Although I was having a great time, it was time to head back to school. We quickly said good-bye and helped clean up as much as we could before we left.
