This was the first official class for the Life Course Scholars Program. Although I am still learning everyone’s names, it was nice seeing everyone again and catching up with them. It was pretty much an overview of what to expect for the quarter. We went over the syllabus and our future assignments. There seemed like a lot of work, because of the two big events we will be holding. However, I am really looking forward to the events themselves, the Senior Prom and Partner Dancing. We discussed having committees or forming groups for different responsibilities, such as food, music, activities, and decorations. I haven’t planned a social event since high school, and I kind of missed it. It seems like a lot of fun and something that the seniors will really enjoy. Professor Lewis and Professor Bussell shared previous years’ Senior Prom and Hoedown Throwdown. It sounded very successful. Learning about the raffle prizes from last year, like blankets and gift cards, and that the event provided the seniors an extra meal for the day, made me realize that what we are doing means something to them. The LCS program can make an impact on people’s lives and the Healthy Aging Project (HAP) that we may come up with may be able to become something like the Senior Prom. Although it may seem like a lot of planning, we have a very good team that I look forward to working with.
We also shared who our Extraordinary Person (EP) is and why we chose him/her. Choosing a family member or someone we know as our EP makes this project much more meaningful. After knowing everybody’s reasons and how much their EP means to them, I am excited to see the finished memoirs and hearing about everyone’s overall experience.
