Howdy y’all!
The dance at Casa de Manana Retirement Community was just this past Friday night. Overall, I think it went very well. It was definitely a good amount of work put in, but all completely worth it. This Oscars themed dance was from 7 to 8 PM. My fellow LCSers and I got there just before 6:00 PM to start decorating and setting up. I got to see everybody’s creative side and the lower lounge was decorated beautifully. Good job decorations committee and everybody that helped decorate.
The residents walked in on a red carpet and was greeted by our large group of students. It was as if we were paparazzi and they were celebrities, I think most of them enjoyed it. They were given their raffle ticket at the entrance and could take a picture at the photobooth if they wanted. The activities committee did a great job on that, by the way. The live band “Hot Pursuit” was amazing. They tried teaching us the waltz before the dance started, so we were able to actually do it on the dance floor.
As the night went on, both the seniors and students danced, enjoyed the live entertainment, and ate tasty treats. Thank you Kelly and the catering staff at Casa for preparing all of the food and drinks. It was a great night and I believe everybody had a great time. For the seniors, it was a time to be active and lively, and also be around good friends. For me, it was very heartwarming to see seniors get up and dance, and to show such liveliness because of something we did. It was just something wonderful and very memorable for me.
The raffle was also a big hit. I think the orchids were the most popular prizes. A lot of the seniors, especially the women, were disappointed that they didn’t get to win that particular prize. However, those that won were all very grateful and ecstatic just by winning any prize. Thank you food and raffle committee, great food options and prizes. Even though it was only an hour, everybody had a great time. At the end, many of the seniors came up to thank us and really appreciated what we did. They are very excited to come back next year for another great dance. Hopefully it will get better as we learn from our mistakes and pass it on to the next class so that it can improve. Since I was the in-between person with Casa and LCS, I helped with planning a lot. Some advice for next year is to start the communication as soon as possible so that you can get your questions answered, bounce ideas off of the people at Casa and your fellow students, and have time to change plans if needed. Also buy things early too. Our purchases were sort of rushed and I was a little worried it wouldn’t arrive in time. Finally, definitely meeting with Kelly in-person is much better than email. She was able to show me the room and how she planned to have the room set up for us. I was also able to get her approval on things faster so that decisions can be made sooner. I hope the next dance will be even better for the seniors.
Take care, polar bear.
