This outing was really needed for me in a way.
I talked to, at length, with Ms. Nellie, who is just a ball of energy. She radiates joy and warmth and I just truly needed it. I have been going through it this quarter and I just needed a calming older presence and she truly was the answer to my prayers. She talked about being a nurse and moving to San Diego not too long ago and how she got off the list and secured affordable housing and how thankful she is about life at all times. She had an estranged relationship with her kids in New York and they had a bad relationship with drugs and they passed away but she kept trucking. Regardless of everything in her life she just kept trucking. She didn't let anything let her down and she saw the positives in everything and she told us she was so content with life at this point and she was so happy to be in our presence and believes in us.
I also spoke to another elder woman who was Pakistsni who just moved to San Diego with her daughter. She loved seeing other Muslims and South Asian identifying folk and was one of the new volunteers at the center. She told us about her education and love of literature and boasted about her kids and was again, so thankful and surprised that we just wanted to hear about her life. She kept apologizing for talking but we kept telling her that we really are here for her. This was the morning of my global health symposium which I was very nervous about and I was really glad I went to this outing first.
