This was a really hard week for me but also a very needed week for me in many ways. I heard a lot of presentations about peoples parents, grandparents, extended family members and chosen family members and it gave me perspective on the roles that people have in our lives and that even though they might not always be with near us distance wise, it does not mean that the lessons that they teach us or the love that they have for us is gone. Wayne's love for his grandmother was very eminent and the role of strong women in his life overall was very apparent and it just reminded me of all the strong women in my life, both my mother and my chosen family that have guided and mentored me through a lot. The story of Victoria's mom was also very touching and made me tear up because the loss of a parent is something that I never wanted to think about because my parents mean so much to me and I already feel so much guilt being so far away from them and for still barely keeping up with them. I just want to always be a source of pride for my parents and just have our relationship grow the older I get and for us to get closer and closer. I also hope that this was a healing space for Victoria and that we were able to be there for her in a capacity that she valued. I also loved Tan's EP presentation because it was about her dad and it made me tear up to see how much she loved him and how close she was to him because I am very close to my dad as well, he's my best friend and just gets me more than anyone else ever has and I just miss going out with him.
When it came to my presentation, I was really nervous and got chocked up a little and went on little tangents here and there because my mom really is the coolest but overall I was so happy to tell her story. She's such a kind human being and the inclusion of her video at the end from her own words was the best way to end it because it allowed her to be able to express her most authentic self and it gave the class an opportunity to get a glimpse of the woman that I know and love.
