This week’s class was short and sweet as we needed to check in on all of our group projects. It is exciting to see progress beginning in terms of the final execution of the HAPs. I’m really excited for both of them to take place. This week, I helped Professor Lewis get together a list of items and have them ordered so that we could have them in time for both HAPs. So far, in terms of projects for this class, I have encountered minimal problems. However, the theme change with the Gary and Mary West Center was just a bit frustrating, considering we had a couple of activities that were “Oscar” themed in the works. Thankfully, the LCSers are flexible and accommodating, so we were able to work around this. We finalized our plans for picking up the decorations as well as transportation to and from Casa de Manana on Friday. I’m mostly excited for the HAPs because I am hoping to make some connections with elders at each of the community centers in order to complete some more oral histories for my individual HAP.
For my individual HAP, I wanted to compile a series of memoirs from multiple people. I really enjoyed the interview process of my father. I was hoping to do a couple other members of my family as well as other seniors in San Diego, through the community centers that we work with. I’m hoping to get enough interviews that I could write a short book for my own enjoyment. Professor Lewis also suggested that I compile all the existing oral histories for LCS and turn them into a website/blog. This is a VERY big task, so thankfully Chase approached me and asked if he could help on that aspect of the project. We want to make an oral history blog on wordpress. My one concern with this is how comfortable Trish is with us using her idea and making it into a website of our own. Obviously, we will credit her and link the website to purchase her book. I still want to e-mail her and make sure she’s alright with it.
Lastly, for our NAP, my group is planning on visiting Barrio Logan again around 1 pm on Friday to finish our observations. The observation piece is the one I am most concerned about. I am comfortable using social explorer and the census website to find the necessary information and using the tools I have learned in USP classes so far, I feel fairly comfortable knowing what I need to look for. My main issue is that we actually haven’t seen many older people in the area. I’m hoping that our census data correlates with this. I really want to go back on a Sunday morning, but unfortunately I’m not available on Sundays. Professor Bussell said this is the best time because of all the church go-ers in the area. I’m excited to see what we find for our NAP as well.
Overall this class has been very rewarding so far, and I’m excited to see what the coming weeks bring. I’m very thankful to be in it for another quarter.
