Our first class meeting was fairly simple in terms of the content. It still made me excited to get started with everything in the class. Next week we are going to the Gary and Mary West Center. Upon research of the West Health foundation, I’ve learned that the projects have received more than 466 grants totaling almost 200 million dollars, indicating strong support and therefore success. The serving seniors program offers two meals a day, housing assistance, wellness classes, and more. In class we were told that we will have a chance to serve the meals. I’m looking forward to this quite eagerly. In my hometown, I used to volunteer at a Pay-As-You-Can vegan cafe put on by my non-profit yoga studio. Using donated space and ingredients, the group made nutritious vegan meals served for 3 hours in the community. I remember how good I felt after serving the food and interacting with the community in need through the intimate process of food. It also felt good being a part of the provision of nutrition for those who may not normally get this on a daily basis. In terms of my healthy aging project, I already brainstormed something involving music. I really appreciate the power of nostalgia that music can manifest. I would love to be able to put on a karaoke night, open mic night or possible sing-a-long type of event. Even a concert with a cover band that does oldies or something similar would be amazing. I’d love to see the kind of memories that music could conjure.
