This week in class was more classroom-structured. I’m still thankful for the small class size and I am comfortable with my classmates. However, I still wish that I felt closer with many of them. I may have appreciated more bonding-style exercises incorporated with the retreat. After talking with one of the alums, I’m under the impression that at this point, the past cohorts were a little bit closer. There is still plenty of time to grow and the group work is far from over, but I’m looking forward to this group work in hopes of increasing the bonds.
For my HAP, I was really hoping to do something with music. I’ve seen multiple incredibly compelling videos of seniors with mental disabilities and memory-related diseases react miraculously to old music. The sound is so powerful that it can shake some of the most powerful symptoms and at the least permit for some peace and enjoyment. I love to sing and if I could use my voice and love of music to help someone’s day be better, I would probably die (not really but I honestly have no other way of explaining my excitement and emotion for this project right now). My plans for help and resources include KSDT radio station (an org I’m a part of), as well as friends I know who are also musically talented. I also have plenty of friends that would be willing to help. I can automatically recruit my sister who is an angel and helps me with everything. I’m sure if I can provide service hours, I can also tap into the urban changemakers, student representative program, as well as some students who I know at Preuss.
My main concern about my HAP is deciding where I should locate it. My ukulele is very easy to transport. It would be great if I could find access to a keyboard as well. However, if not, ideally I would love to find a place with access to a piano. I can’t play very well but I can find someone who can. Either way, my ukulele won’t be enough to execute the event I would like at the scale I desire.
I was thinking that I probably could take on this project alone. I do know myself and my time. My main issue is that I don’t have a car, so location as close as possible would be ideal. I live at the cross of Regents Road and La Jolla Village Drive. There is a senior living center on my block as well as a few others along Nobel - all within walking distance. I may try to come up with a simple event proposal and drop by to see if I could fix something in that proximity.
I have a lot of eagerness regarding these projects and I expect the results to be very rewarding.
