This past Wednesday, week 5, we spent our day discussing several topics. Our first topic started off with us discussing our visit to Casa de Manana. It was really nice to hear the stories that my other peers had to say about their social with an elder at Casa de Manana. What I found very interesting was that several of my peers that I was talking to after the visit mentioned that a lot of the seniors they talked to were people who had jobs like secretary, teacher or someone who worked from home. I thought this was very interesting because Casa de Manana is so expensive so I wondered if their careers allowed them to pay this or they have children who are paying for it. Overall Casa de Manana was a beautiful and eye opening experience and I cannot wait to go back and interact with the community there during our tea dance (I think that is what its called).
After discussing our visit to Casa de Manana my group and I had to do our book presentation. I think this was the first group project that I worked with that I felt we all had something to contribute and open to every ones ideas (: I know that I am a very shy person but I am working on being more open, sharing my ideas and most importantly being able to present. I did not present to the whole class but I know its something that I need to get over and learn to speak in front of an audience but I am thankful that my peers were there to support and present. I really enjoyed reading the book we presented on, Selling The Fountain of Youth, because it talked a lot about hormones and how they came to be in society. It was very interesting to learn that hormones were such a big hit a few years back and even today because it helps individuals will all sorts of symptoms like fatigue, weight, menopause, etc. The author of this book however was clearly against the hormone industry because it was more about the money then the actual ethics and health of individuals. The author clearly pointed out that many of the hormones that were being given to people were not tested in great extents to see their future outcomes. Hormones kept being sold to make money the easy way, I do agree with this but I wouldn’t say that all her main findings were true because it was bias to some point. I think that the ending of the story left me shocked because it ended with some of the sellers asking if what they were doing was ethical. If people have to ask this question, it clearly states that they themselves don’t even know if it is or not. I think that people wTowards the end we also got to see oral projects presented by my peers on their EP, it was sooooo beautiful to hear all their stories and how creative they got with their presentation and scrapbook (: It is always nice to hear about other people lives and their hardships or accomplishments. I really enjoyed this project and I know that in the future I would like to make one for my mom, dad and even husband (: ay cause because something may work for some time but may have an impact down the road. It is also very important to do research and see if there have been trials and if it has been approved by the FDA or DEA. Overall I am really into natural remedies so if aging is seen as a disease my biggest recommendation that I would say is to exercise, Alice fro, Casa de Manana is the biggest example that exercise is key to aging and we eventually will all get there it is part of life.
After the book presentation we got the opportunity to get into our groups and discuss what we were going to do for the NAP and HAP. I think we came to an agreement that we would have a Great Gatsby theme for Casa de Manana and the West Center. I am very excited, I am in the food/raffle committee so this week I should be coming up with an email to send to corporations to see who is able to donate some gift cards to raffle for our elders.
The neighborhood that I am part of is Barrio Logan, I have been in the community before but only to eat not actually walk around a lot and observe it so I am excited for that. My group and I will be visiting it for the first time as a group on Wednesday after our site visit. On another note I am also very excited for this weeks site visit because not only do we get to interact with elders again but we get to do Zumba! That sounds very fun and its valentines also (:

We ended the lecture with an organization from UCSD, Get a Cane, who is recruiting volunteers to work with underserved populations. Get a Cane is involved in getting donations like a walkers or walking devices that are in good conditions to be able to donate them to underserved populations that do need them. This is a great organization that started with the CEO and his experience in the hospital seeing an older man without a walker or wheel chair who needed it and collapsing to the floor. It is amazing to see organizations like this start from something they saw or experienced and give to the community who needs it the most, they work a lot with elders which is the focus of the Life Scholars Program, therefor it is a great opportunity to join the club (:
