I cannot believe that this is the first class to our last quarter as part of LCS. I remember like it was just yesterday when I was in Dr. Lewis’s class and hearing about this program. I was very excited to be part of this course that I was very nervous while doing the application. I took LCS as a major opportunity to use what I learned in Public Health and use it to help/assist the elderly community. I am very thankful for this opportunity to be part of such an incredible and outstanding program, it makes me a little sad that in a few weeks this course will come to an end for me but I also know that if I am in San Diego that I can come back and help the next LCS’s. I am not 100% sure if I will stay in San Diego, but if I do I know that I would like to come back and help as much as I can with the new LCS’s.
Besides it being the first class of my last quarter in this program, we got to discuss some very exciting projects that are to come for this quarter. Unlike last quarter, this time around we wouldn’t be doing as many site visits but we are in charge of some really nice projects. This quarter we are also going to be reading some short stories and discussing them in the class, aside from that the main ideas are to work on our healthy aging project, communication assignment and putting together our HAP into a presentation.
As part of the HAP, I am collaborating with Kyle, Monique and Elizabeth to bring an event to Bayside Community Center. Art from the Heart is what we are calling the event, our goal here is to bring art to the elders in tis community and have a paint instructor teach them various art techniques through painting on canvases. I think that bringing elders together for this event is important and sweet because not only do we get to connect with the elders in this community but we also go against stereotypes that are said about the elderly community. For example, several people think that elders are very route oriented (they want to do the same thing over and over again), they are not patient, or like talking to younger generation but that is not true. I think that being at this community center last quarter showed that this was not true, many of the seniors there were very entertained with us talking, wanted to know what we wanted to do as careers or what we like to do and were very patient as we talked. This event allows us to not only connect with them but show them and those surrounding them that elders like to have fun also, they are not just “old people” they are human beings like all of us who wish to have fun and distract themselves by painting, doing Zumba, etc. I am very excited to put this event with my peers and the Bayside Community Center.
