Gary and Mary West Center is located in Downtown San Diego. I have been in downtown several times but I never got the know this area. The first impression of the Gary and Mary West Center and its surrounding area was that the streets are narrow but clean. From what I saw, there was no fancy restaurant and bar compare to little Italy. I remember that I saw a McDonald’s and a 7-11 store. The giant blue plastic fountain kind thing got my attention immediately after we stood in front of the center. We all used the blue thing to wash our hands before we entered the center. I never saw that kind of portable hand washing sink before and it that surprised me because of the high level of hygiene awareness.
I started to look at the food they provided for elders when all of us lined up to help serving food. I remember the menu that day includes a scoop of can fruit, a slice of already made pumpkin pie, four or five meatballs and gravy, and a piece of cookie. Even though there were a lot of verities of food, the amount of food looks not enough for one. I still remember that there was a lady asked me if she could get more gravy but the kitchen said no and she looked at me and said that at least she tried.
I am also surprised by the quantities of people who can speak Chinese in the center. Me and Sylvia greeted them and wished them a happy Chinese New Year using Mandarin and I can saw some of them were very excited.
