On Wednesday, January 10, 2018, the 2018 LCS Cohort had its first class meeting. It was a simple meeting, wherein we went over the syllabus and discussed the goals of the program, assignments, and what was expected of us. The meeting energized me, and made me feel even more eager to volunteer with the senior citizens at the centers. Having grown up with six grandparents who were all very active in my life, I know how important it is to have regular interaction with elderly people and the kind of wisdom they can bring to your life. I am looking forward to this aspect of the program the most. I am intrigued as to what wisdom the seniors have to share, and what experiences brought them to where they are today, what events shaped them into the people they are today. During class, we went down the list of relatives we planned to interview for our Oral History Projects. I enjoyed hearing the stories that the Cohort members had to tell. The elders came from a diverse range of backgrounds, many of them spoke languages other than English, and had a rich range of life experiences to bring to the table. I enjoyed speaking to the class about my maternal grandmother and the close relationship that she and I share. My hope is that, by participating in this program, I will be able to bring that same type of joy that I bring to my grandmother to another elderly person's life who could truly use and appreciate it. Only time will tell. I am excited for what experiences and lessons these two quarters in LCS will bring!
