This week we toured casa de mañana senior living in La Jolla. Of course, when you hear La Jolla you immediately think ocean side, wealthy, educated individuals – and yes it was just that. The view was spectacular. Literally, place right across the street from the beach. The actual senior housing in divided into multiple building on the same street right across the street or next door.
When we were given the brief speech presentation outside the facility, I was already amazed by the difference between the other facilities we have seen based on the information she was telling us. The cost to stay in one of the building go up to the three thousands, if I remember correctly. That is a drastic difference from the other facilities. The majority if the demographic is educated white people. The women giving us the information outside the building seemed like she was treading around the reality of what the demographics look like there, but it was so apparent that she made her deflection more obvious. She just gave us the comparison of males to females and states that most if not all individuals that stay there come from a very educated background.
In terms of the facility itself, it was great! They have recreational activities so people can exercise and maintain goof health. There is a community garden where each resident gets their own section to grow and plant flowers or whatever they choose to. They have huge dining rooms full of buffet style dinning. The residents don’t have to worry about cleaning, cooking or washing clothes. It’s like a long-term vacation. I believe there is also extracurricular actives such as painting and karaoke. In one of the building they have a pool located outside and I am not sure if our tour guide also said that they had an indoor one, possibly. Movie night is also very popular at the facility and when we were visiting, we actually go to see a few individuals in the theatre room ready to watch a film.
They also have villas available and the tour guide mentioned that some resident bought 2 villas because they wanted more room. We didn’t get to see inside any of the rooms, but I imagine they have to be something spectacular for the price they are paying. The tour guide also mentioned that a lot of the residents are aware of the lack of housing for other elders in the community, specifically those or low-income and homeless population, and that they are active in the community to help support them, but failed to mentioned exactly how they are active in the community…
In all, the facility was really wonder. I wish that these types of facilities were more accessible to every other elder in need. I don’t agree with the idea that if you are more well off than others that means that you get to enjoy life at a much higher level. I don’t agree with the ideology that because they pay out of pocket that means they get to acquire all these other privileges. It just truly seems unfair to me. There are so many people that simply didn’t receive the same opportunities as others and therefore had to make do with what they could. A lot of people sacrifice so much out of their lives that the least the government can do when one becomes in need of a senior home is to provide free of charge appropriate/ up to par senior housing for all.
In my culture it definitely is not common or ever even thought of to place one of our elders in a senior home. We rather take them in and watch over them because it is a comfortable, safe environment and who else if going to take care of your own family member than your own family. Also, I am sure that economic status has a lot to do with why it was never ebon thought about, but even if I was wealthy, I would never want my mother or grandmother to go to a senior home. Of course, to each their own and if you have the means to be place in a great facility as such and it is your request, then by all means. For my personally I believe that life is limited, and I want to spend as much time as possible with family. Seniors often get forgotten when placed in a Senior home, though I am sure they make friends and companions but there is nothing compared to family.
