This week for our learning engage group, we went to the Gary and Mary West Center to chat with a couple of seniors about their lives. We met many interesting seniors and one of them that we talked to named Hugo was telling my group about the history of the Inca empire, religion, and Peru. It was an interesting chat and I learned a bit more about Peru. Hugo is one of the most interesting seniors that I have met so far through the learning engage groups because he was very invested in telling us about politics and history, while making drawings to accompany what he was saying. He reminded me a little of my dad because both of them like keeping up with the history and politics of their country. I remember as a kid and even whenever I come home for breaks, my dad would tell me some interesting fact he learned that day and he would often draw out what he was explaining too. After the history lesson from Hugo, he told us how he was thankful for the services that the West Center has for the seniors. One of the most memorable message he left for us to ponder was that life is too short to only focus on accomplishing one task whether that is being a doctor or going to law school. He said to live a happy life, it is important to do the things you love and cultivate your hobbies. This reminded me of the book discussion we had last week because that was also a common theme from the book.
