This week we went to the San Diego LGBT Community Center in Hillcrest. We were outnumbered by the seniors there by like 1:3. This learning exchange group was more interesting than the others we have had so far. In my table, there were three seniors: Romeo, Ronnie, and Luciano. Romeo used to play football for the 49ners for two years and is currently retired. Ronnie used to be a high school teacher in the Bay Area and Luciano was an elementary school teacher in the East Coast. While we were eating, we discussed about art and music. For the most part, music played a huge part in our lives and the seniors shared how it was beautiful to create art and be able to share it with the world. We talked about how music can bring back happy and sad memories. It was interesting to hear why Romeo said that music played a negative part in his life because it makes him nostalgic about his younger life when he used to play football. Nowadays, art has shifted to cater to social media, especially the emergence of popup museums like ice cream museum that allow people to take aesthetic pictures just for social media. This is not a bad thing though, but just a new form of creativity. We ended the lunch with Michael Jackson’s “Man In the Mirror” music video to invoke change within each and every one of us. The song reaffirmed my desire and served as a reminder as to why I do the things I do and volunteer/ join organizations that offer resources to the underserved. It also helped me see that change can only happen if you put yourself in unfamiliar situations or conversations with people to understand where they are coming from and to learn of their life stories and struggles. It is only after you learn about different people you feel a desire to be the change that you want to see.
